The\u00a0New Zealand Customs Service\u00a0<\/strong>is a government agency with the job of ensuring the\u00a0security of New Zealand\u2019s borders and is composed of approximately 1,200 staff spread\u00a0across the country.<\/p>\n

As New Zealand\u2019s first line of defence, the agency\u2019s main purpose is to\u00a0detect and prevent dangerous people and prohibited goods from crossing New Zealand\u2019s\u00a0border, to facilitate trade and travel, and to collect revenue owing to the Crown.<\/p>\n

The Challenge<\/h3>\n

With a large distributed team throughout New Zealand, the Customs team wanted to make the\u00a0process of managing learning easier and more efficient, while at the same time enabling staff\u00a0and managers to improve the way they access development opportunities.Compliance\u00a0requirements and adherence to regulations are key drivers for the organisation, hence the\u00a0ability to manage and track progress across all learning activities in the LMS was a key goal\u00a0for Customs\u2019 Totara Lear<\/a> implementation.<\/p>\n

The Solution<\/h3>\n

In the run-up to their launch, Customs ensured that a large catalogue of courses, both off-the-shelf and in-house, would be made available. In particular, they made use of the Program\u00a0feature in Totara Learn to create work area frameworks and then mapped those across\u00a0to appropriate courses and learning activities so that at all parts of the organisation were\u00a0directed to the training\/development that was relevant to them.Catalyst<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>provided the\u00a0technical support, working with the Customs IT architects within stringent security\u00a0requirements, to deliver an on-premise solution with single sign-on\u00a0(SSO) integration.Another key task undertaken during implementation was the migration of existing learning\u00a0records from a legacy HR system into Totara\u2019s learning records.<\/p>\n
