Will the amount of low-quality content produced become infinite? Will all our jobs fold into nothing and vanish from this universe? Or can a global super-intelligence finally deliver on the 4 hour work day that\u2019s been promised since the 1920s?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many, I\u2019ve been \u2018on the tools\u2019 and experimenting. I\u2019m a learning technologist, with some historic AI experience. Beyond the hype I want to understand the real implications for human development in the workplace, and for L&amp;D professionals in particular.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So here\u2019s my personal AI snapshot as of May 2023: across L&amp;D it\u2019s time to let go of rigid structures and rote\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/?post_type=article&#038;p=40585\">content planning.<\/a> The machines will gobble those up within months. But there\u2019s vast potential for <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/articles\/learner-social-contract\/\">advanced learning desig<\/a>, focused on outcomes, to shift behaviour and meet business goals like never before.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To me, applications like <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/chatgpt\">ChatGPT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midjourney.com\/home\/?callbackUrl=%2Fapp%2F\">Midjourney<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/product\/dall-e-2\">Dall-E<\/a> and others seem to be having the same impact as browsers and search engines did on the 1990s internet. Everything becomes more accessible, more accelerated. Old use cases vanish (have you sent a fax or bought a MiniDisc recently?), while others change (how many in-person conversations do you have each week now, vs someone in 1993?).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time and cost dynamics get upended, and it\u2019s hard to predict how that will play out. On the one hand there\u2019s the obvious, and in my view well-founded, concerns that AI\u2019s remapping of the <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/articles\/ld-skills-for-2026-how-to-overcome-the-biggest-learning-challenges\/the-top-10-skills-youll-need-in-2025\/\">skills landscape<\/a> will disrupt jobs at speed across the economy. On the other hand, humans have <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/resources\/the-14-questions-to-ask-to-identify-an-adaptable-lms\/\">adapted<\/a> through many, many waves of technological innovation going back to the discovery of fire.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our responsibility as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/articles\/must-read-books-for-hr-and-learning-professionals\/\">L&amp;D professionals<\/a> is to understand and help shape that adaptation process. The nuts\u2019n\u2019bolts of it from an L&amp;D perspective are that content production will become much quicker and more easily scalable. But the complex, human nature of the industries we sit across means broader transformation will be lumpy. Reality is stubborn: look at the legal profession, for instance, where AI has seemed on the verge of replacing junior research functions for more than a decade, except it still hasn\u2019t quite happened.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What <\/span><b>will<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happen for us in L&amp;D is a sharp focus on whether having abundant learning content <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/articles\/measuring-learning-performance-outcomes-action-learning\/\">generates any real tangible outcome.<\/a> Which is a question very much worth asking.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At every L&amp;D conference or meetup I\u2019ve ever been to, as an L&amp;D profession we talk about sophisticated learning designs that will genuinely shift behaviour. About customised pathways, <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/articles\/add-personalisation-totara-learn\/\">personalised experiences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/articles\/6-expert-approved-tips-for-continuous-performance-management\/\">continuous feedback,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/articles\/supercharge-career-mobility-with-action-learning\/\">always-on coaching.<\/a> About the ways we know we can lift careers &amp; organizations together.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But after we leave those conversations, full of ideas and energy, too often we fall back into the same old routines, the same old patterns. We design familiar content in familiar ways (click-next and sheep-dip) as the only safe or acceptable option. The \u201cdefault\u201d position.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, that\u2019s precisely what AI will expose. This \u201cL&amp;D default\u201d will be even more ubiquitous. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RQRIOKvR2WM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martha &amp; the Vandellas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said &#8211; or was it Vin Diesel? &#8211; we\u2019ll have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And for me this is cause for great optimism! When I work with the new wave of AI tools, and see what my colleagues at Totara are experimenting with within our learning technology platform, I see so many achievable innovations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is already helping create tailored learning paths and adapt learning experiences to the individual learner&#8217;s needs. This level of personalisation is impossible with traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/us\/articles\/how-content-curation-keeps-employees-engaged\/\">content creation methods<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radically simplifying content production and curation frees designers from \u2018engagement\u2019 which was always a weak proxy for effectiveness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scalable coaching-mentoring conversations use chat technology to assist manager-team dialogue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surfacing hidden skills that exist across the organisation and leveraging them to positive effect\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usefully spotting patterns that suggest individual support is required in terms of wellbeing, learning, or coaching<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The upside of these learning tech advances, and the many others to come, is that we will finally have the time and resources and incentives to focus on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what matters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To genuinely shift behaviour and measurably meet business \/ organizational goals while improving lives.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isn\u2019t this the challenge we always wanted?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My suggestion for anyone in L&amp;D, if you haven\u2019t already, is to jump on the AI tools and get familiar with their capabilities and limitations. Then use their power as leverage for your own thinking, productivity, and innovation: a way to make space for more sophisticated learning design that will more reliably deliver real results.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world of work is evolving rapidly, and technology is driving this change exponentially. As L&amp;D leaders it\u2019s our job to push through the hype, find the substance, and help your people do their best work. Now\u2019s the time.
