Their engaged-to-disengaged employee ratio (23-to-1) nearly doubled the benchmark ratio used to identify \u201cworld-class\u201d companies (12-to-1).<\/p>\n<p>How did Conant manage to rescue the failing company? To understand where these industries are headed, (and the differences between talent management and talent experience) it\u2019s important to grasp how we\u2019ve reached our current world of work.<\/p>\n<p>Over one hundred years ago, the first learning management system (LMS), then called a \u201cteaching machine,\u201d was developed by Sidney Pressey and resembled a crude, compact typewriter:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31061\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.totara.fortyapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/rsz_1rsz_sidney_pressey_machine.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"189\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hackeducation.com\/2018\/04\/26\/cuny-gc\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And when Monster launched the first-ever job board and recruitment website in 1994, it looked like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/rsz_monster_job_board_.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, technology has advanced rapidly since then, and in tandem, so has HR and employee culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>The 1990s: New technology transforms digital HR and L&amp;D processes<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The modern era of HR and the \u201cinformation age\u201d began with the internet being released to the public. SoftArc developed the first-ever learning management system (LMS) software for the MacIntosh platform, and Monster pioneered the first online job searching database.<\/p>\n<p>This revolutionized the employer-applicant tracking aspect of talent management. Scanning paper CVs and resumes into a basic Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and monitoring performance via Excel were miraculous leaps forward from messy manila folders and clunky metal filing cabinets.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>2000-2008: Efficient talent management widens the candidate pool\u00a0 <\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>The ATS became mainstream. Early adopters like IBM, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard started using technology to make HR processes more efficient, and recruiters could now source and screen hundreds of potential candidates to choose the most qualified.<\/p>\n<p>The 2008 recession also forced organizations to think more about optimization and efficiency. This gave rise to cloud HR and integrated talent management tech to improve recruitment, onboarding, succession planning and other HR admin-related tasks.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>2008-2015: A digital-first workplace draws attention to \u201cemployer brands\u201d<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Sites like LinkedIn, Indeed and Glassdoor disrupted the recruitment market, with employees now reviewing employers.<\/p>\n<p>A complex \u201cdigital-first\u201d workplace raised the demand for technical skills. As the economy recovered, more people paused their career ladder climb \u201cmid-rung\u201d to step into a growing gig economy.<\/p>\n<p>For many organizations and HR departments, this created an expensive revolving door of recruitment; new talent entered just as fast as old talent left. In response, more attention was given to employee retention.<\/p>\n<p>To attract and retain talent, companies began offering competitive benefits beyond expected health and retirement programs. But what do we mean when we talk about talent, and <a href=\"\/blog\/five-essentials-of-talent-management\">talent management<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201ctalent\u201d is interpreted differently across separate organizations and sectors. In a general sense, talent describes your company\u2019s lifeblood: your workers.<\/p>\n<p>In specific HR and L&amp;D circles, however, \u201ctalent\u201d describes all employees with the potential or skills to significantly contribute to organizational performance.<\/p>\n<p>As a key function of HR, talent management is the systematic process of attracting, managing and retaining high-performing employees. The typical talent management process covers a comprehensive range of critical stages in the employee lifecycle. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applicant tracking<\/li>\n<li>Recruitment<\/li>\n<li>Performance management<\/li>\n<li>Compensation and benefits<\/li>\n<li>Skills gap analysis<\/li>\n<li>Employee retention<\/li>\n<li>Succession planning<\/li>\n<li>Career management<\/li>\n<li>Deployment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A strong talent management strategy is key for any organization. It helps fulfill critical skills gaps, boost performance and manage employee logistics. Skilled workers are in short supply \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the Fourth Industrial Revolution takes hold, the demand for competitive skills required to thrive in a digital-first and complex workplace is high. The supply of skilled workers, however, is low.<\/p>\n<p>Employees that currently possess coveted skills are now asserting their expectations in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Employees want meaningful work\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/rsz_txp_pillar__diagram_5.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Employees that perform well are more likely to view their role as \u201crelationship-focused\u201d and their work environment as \u201ccollaborative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This shows that modern workers prioritize purpose and meaning in their work. They want to work for (and will invest more of their hard-earned money into) companies that stand for something and offer a job role in which they can learn and develop.<\/p>\n<p>When employees find meaningful work in which they can build their skills and expertise, they respond with higher levels of performance and a stronger sense of loyalty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.
