Esri Elevates Learning with Totara TXP: Flexible Platform Empowers Enhanced Self-Assessment and Learning for Employees and Customers

Esri Deutschland GmbH und Esri Schweiz AG are the technology distributors for location intelligence and GIS (geographic information systems) in the DECH region. The company was founded 1979 and has offices in Germany and Switzerland. It is part of Esri Inc., which is the global market leader in GIS software.

The Challenge 

Esri DECH dedication to a structured onboarding process and clear learning paths is evident in their products, emphasizing the importance of effective onboarding for both external and internal users. While successfully implementing these elements through Totara Learn’s standard program and certification options, a new challenge arose: Empowering learners to self-assess their knowledge, personalize their learning journey, and automate their course assignments.

This challenge encompassed three key objectives:

  1. Establishing an expandable and flexible extended enterprise system with top-tier data protection to ensure the security and privacy of user information.
  2. Creating compelling and interactive content within Totara Learn to enhance learner engagement and participation in training programs.
  3. Optimizing user experience and workflow within the learning platform, providing learners with a seamless and intuitive interface to promote active participation and knowledge retention.
  4. Ensuring seamless data exchange within Esri’s software world was a crucial aspect of the platform integration.

The Solution

The solution developed by Esri DECH and LearnChamp addressed the imperative need for a structured onboarding process and clear learning paths within Totara Learn, aimed at facilitating efficient product onboarding for both external and internal users.

Leveraging Totara Learn’s standard program and certification options laid a solid foundation, but the challenge of enabling learners to self-assess their knowledge and personalize course assignments necessitated a comprehensive approach.

Together we tackled following key questions:

  • How to seamlessly integrate self-assessment in Totara Learn for independent knowledge evaluation?
  • What strategies could be employed to create dynamic and compelling content within Totara Learn, motivating learners to actively participate in training?
  • How to optimize the user experience and workflow within Totara Learn to foster maximum engagement and knowledge retention?

Key components of the solution included:

  • Custom UI: Tailored to Esri’s needs, the user interface provided an intuitive and seamless learning experience.
  • Content Creation Flexibility: Utilizing both Totara and external authoring tools, content creation became dynamic and accessible across all devices, facilitating on-the-go learning.
  • Enhanced User Experience: Adaptive pathway features, guided by self-assessment results, personalized the learning journey for each user.
  • Improved Assessment Features: Introducing new assessment tools not only enhanced user experience but also facilitated comprehensive reporting for better insights.
  • Integration via Totara’s APIs: Seamless integration with third-party systems was achieved through Totara’s robust APIs, ensuring smooth data exchange and interoperability.

By addressing the challenges head-on and implementing a holistic solution, Esri DECH and LearnChamp successfully transformed their learning environment, empowering users to navigate their learning journey with confidence and efficiency.

  • Since its GoLive, Esri DECH has experienced a remarkable 400% increase in user growth.
  • Scalable system with multilanguage setup prepared to welcome new colleagues, partners and customers.
  • More than 60 different interactive courses and offerings and a growing number of programs and certifications, with and without trainers, providing learners with a well-structured onboarding as well as the possibility to get certified for the specific systems and products.

  • In the case of Esri DECH self-assessment workflows, the Interactive Hotspot Menu proves to be a more effective solution compared to a recommendation engine. This is primarily because course assignments were traditionally determined by system administrators based on job requirements rather than individual skills. While configuring the Interactive Hotspot Menu for different user paths may require additional effort, it offers greater efficiency by enabling personalized course recommendations aligned with users’ knowledge levels.
  • Both administrators and users can track learning progress, identify areas for improvement, and engage in the entire process in an appealing and enjoyable format.
  • Reduced manual administration, by e.g., using SSO, HR Import with custom fields to enroll users into audiences and thus into relevant courses.
  • Integration with analytics and CRM platforms. Advanced analytics in order to learn how the learning in the organization impacts its processes, teams and customers.
  • Cutting training costs, saving effort and time on administration work and increase of the online presence of Esri DECH and its products.
