The 7 sessions you need to attend at DevLearn 2018

The Totara team is looking forward to its trip to Las Vegas in a couple of weeks for DevLearn 2018, and this year our plans are bigger and better than ever before. CEO Richard Wyles will be attending, as will members of the US and UK teams and, for the first time ever, the Totara Community team will be joining the Totara Village to demonstrate how we’ve created a truly global, dynamic learning community.

With so many sessions running throughout the expo, it can be pretty overwhelming figuring out which to attend. That’s why we’ve picked out some of our top sessions to ensure you make the most of your time at the show. And of course, if you think we’ve missed any good ones, we’d love to hear about them.

1. 4 freedoms for e-learning success: Vistaprint case study

OK, so we may be a little biased with this one, but our very own Daniel Vecchi will be presenting with Totara customer Vistaprint’s Courtney Bentley about their Totara Learn implementation by eThink Education. This session will focus on the pitfalls of proprietary learning software, why freedom is so crucial when it comes to designing a flexible, future-proof learning strategy and how Vistaprint uses Totara Learn to educate and empower learners across the globe to achieve its business objectives.

2. Strategies for improving LMS adoptio

Even if you have the best LMS in the world, it’s no good if nobody is using it. That’s why we reckon this session with Tracie Cantu is worth a look, as it will help you construct user personas, build use cases, identify LMS needs and aid change management processes. As an added bonus, you will also find out how to identify what you need when you next hire a member of your L&D team and how to develop the skills they need to thrive in their role.

3. Give your organisation the freedom to innovate

Totara’s Daniel Vecchi will also be taking to the stage on day 2 of the expo, this time with Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV)’s Charles Ackerman. This session will cover how PCADV addressed their evolving business needs with a customised LMS that was designed to support their nationally renowned training programme, manage distinct learner audiences and improve the efficiency of their learning administration process.

4. Demystifying the LMS selection process

With hundreds of learning management systems on the market, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all the choice. With nearly half of organisations looking for a new learning technology provider, we’re recommending this session with Brandon Hall Group’s David Wentworth, which will delve into how to narrow down your selection and identify a modern, flexible learning platform that will support your learning programme going forward.

5. Learning technology’s past, present and future: a Guild Master panel

If you’re already happy with your LMS, this session runs at the same time as David Wentworth’s, and features a bumper lineup of Guild Masters like Julie Dirksen, Jane Bozarth and Marc Rosenberg discussing the way technology is and will continue to be embedded in the way we work and learn. The panel will also look at the technologies expected to disrupt organisational learning in the future, so this is a conversation you don’t want to miss.

6. Designing AR experiences for performance support

Join Chad Udell to find out more about one of the learning technology industry’s hottest topics at the moment – augmented reality (AR). Lots of organisations recognise its benefits and want to get involved, but aren’t sure how to take full advantage in the context of their own business. This session will help you identify where AR can be used in your performance support. This is about focusing your budget on an AR strategy that will work rather than blowing your entire budget on the latest buzzword, and if you’re seriously considering introducing AR into your learning programme, this is a must-see session.

7. Multiplying your L&D capacity with employee-generated learning

If you’re sticking around for day 3 of DevLearn 2018, it could be worth checking out Kasper Spiro’s session about employee-generated learning (EGL). This session is aimed at every L&D professional who has had their budget cut, but has been asked to do more with less money and resources. Kasper believes that the answer to this could be leveraging the in-house expertise of employees to empower them to drive and self-serve their own training needs, and this session will help you discover how to implement EGL at scale in your own organisation.
