Technicom creates custom-made learning environments with Totara Learn multi-tenancy within a day

Technicom is the leading private educational institute in The Netherlands in advising and developing students and employees in engineering, logistics, safety, energy and sports. They participate in several public-private projects within these sectors.

The Challenge

For years, Technicom had been using Moodle LMS to share all their learning activities and resources with students, partners, and clients. However, the look and feel of the LMS was limited to the Technicom branding, and clients sometimes required more customisations.

To be able to deliver more value and flexibility for their clients and more efficiency in the internal administration processes, Technicom implemented Totara Learn in cooperation with Totara partner UP learning.

The Solutio

Totara Lear‘s multi-tenancy feature was a major factor in choosing Totara Learn. Furthermore, Technicom’s familiarity with Moodle helped in getting the new system quickly operational for several of its clients. Technicom also used the flexibility of the system to further increase customer value by:

  • Creating a custom plugi that allowed for specific user account creation per tenant, ensuring that each tenant had their own personalized experience.
  • Creating a custom login page URL per tenant such as, JIJPLUS and OSF Acadamy.
  • Using the E-mail notification formatting option by adding branding and a link to the specific tenant URL using custom HTML (see screenshots).
  • Creating custom roles for specific tenant requirements, for example, certain teacher groups didn’t want to receive notifications.

Results

Faster, easier administration with custom accounts

The new solution reduced the amount of time that the IT department needs for setting up client environments from at least a week to within half a day. Furthermore, custom user account creation means a non-technical user can create new accounts and enrol students into the courses and programmes within minutes, which used to be a process that could have a lead time of a couple of days.

Custom branding boosts client attractio

The ability to use the clients’ branding in the LMS and customise its appearance significantly enhanced the ability to convince prospects to work with Technicom. They have already set up 8 tenants with several more coming up in 2023. The flexibility of the solution makes it an attractive platform for developing students for the global challenges in energy transition, sustainable logistics, and engineering. This requires more and more custom learning paths instead of traditional 2-3 year education programs.
