How to put your people at the heart of your Talent Experience Platform

You know the phrase, ‘build it and they will come’? Does that really work when building a learning platform? 

In recent years West College Scotland have completely reimagined their LMS. But, when it came to starting fresh, the team took their time to understand the needs of their people before jumping into building a solution. 

West College Scotland is a Further and Higher Education College with campuses and learning centres based in Clydebank, Greenock and Paisley.

Paul Ferguson, Organisational Development Manager, joined the team in 2021, and when he arrived, he found that selfdirected learning was nonexistent. All employees had access to was a simple landing page that linked out to mandatory learning content, leaving little to be desired when it came to compliance and learner engagement

Paul used Totara, implemented by Think Learning, to help build a user-led experience. 

The first two questions Paul asked were:   

  • What are the needs of the organisation?
  • What are the needs of its people?

 

The first question was simple to answer. The organisation needed employees to be more complaint with mandatory learning and engage with continuous professional development. It also needed a better approach to 1:1s with managers including how to log these conversations. 

The second question was more challenging. Employee engagement was low and many attempts had already been made to increase this. The organisation was still performing well, winning awards and achieving good student satisfaction. So, the question became more: 

 ‘How can we support you to continue and improve this good work?’
