From Tradition to Transformation: How Swiss Life Select Slovensko modernised learning at scale

Swiss Life Select Slovensko a.s. is part of the international Swiss Life Group, with a history spanning more than 165 years. The company provides financial advisory services built on a personal approach and long-term client relationships.

Through its sales network and internal teams, Swiss Life Select supports professional development through structured and systematic learning. The digitalisation of learning processes, including the implementation of an LMS, plays an important role in improving the efficiency, quality and accessibility of training across the organisation.

The Challenge

Swiss Life Select identified several challenges within its learning and development environment. A primary objective was to bring all learning activities into a single platform, increase the visibility of learning opportunities and establish structured learning paths aligned to different roles.

Training needed to be adapted to the requirements of associates, managers and sales representatives. Onboarding processes required redesign to ensure consistency and clarity for new employees. Regulatory compliance training also required stronger automation and improved process control.

The organisation also sought to ensure that learning content remained engaging, visually clear and interactive. At the same time, it aimed to combine classroom delivery with digital learning formats while providing reliable reporting for managers and learning administrators.

As the learning ecosystem expanded, maintaining high-quality training while ensuring financial sustainability became an additional priority.

The Solution

Swiss Life Select implemented Totara Learn, an open-source LMS designed to support high levels of flexibility and customisation. The platform was aligned with organisational processes, regulatory requirements and the company’s long-term learning strategy. Its open architecture enabled integration within the existing system landscape and adaptation to internal workflows.

From a user perspective, the post-implementation environment was designed to be clear and intuitive, supporting adoption across the organisation. To encourage early engagement, the platform was launched with e-learning modules accessible to all associates, ensuring active users logged in and familiarised themselves with the system from the outset.

The learning ecosystem continues to develop through the gradual introduction of new courses, formats and system enhancements.

A structured onboarding framework forms a central component of the platform. Recognising the importance of the first three months for new associates, the LMS guides new hires step by step from their first day. This provides visibility of processes, tools and key contacts, supporting faster integration and stronger early retention.

Totara Learn also supports a transparent learning model that reflects increasing quality and financial management requirements. The platform manages both internal and external training programmes, including courses co-financed by associates. For each course, the full price, company contribution and participant payment are displayed clearly. Participants must confirm course conditions, acknowledging co-funding arrangements before enrolment.

This approach supports training quality, financial transparency, budget control and participant accountability, while enabling continued development of the learning ecosystem in line with business objectives.

The Results

The implementation of Totara Learn delivered measurable improvements across learning and development:

  • Higher quality of learning: Standardised classroom content was converted into e-learning modules, providing consistent access to training materials anytime and anywhere. Face-to-face training is now focused on topics where interaction and practical exercises deliver the greatest value. Pre-study activities ensure participants are prepared in advance, increasing the effectiveness of in-person sessions.

  • More efficient budget utilisation: By converting classroom content into e-learning and adopting a blended learning approach, the organisation reduced costs associated with in-person delivery, travel and printed materials. Digital content can be updated quickly and deployed immediately, ensuring relevance without additional classroom expense.

  • Process automation: Key learning processes, particularly onboarding, are now automated. New associates receive role-based learning content from day one, supporting faster integration. Compliance and approval workflows are managed consistently across the organisation.

  • Enhanced reporting: Totara’s reporting functionality enables automated, role-specific dashboards for managers and learning administrators. This reduces manual data collection and provides real-time insight into participation, completion rates and outcomes.

  • Alignment with company goals: The LMS supports broader organisational objectives, including ESG initiatives. By replacing printed materials with digital resources and enabling remote learning, the company reduces environmental impact while promoting sustainable learning practices.

“The LMS transformed learning into a real business driver. By improving content quality, relevance, and measurability, we were able to clearly connect learning with performance. Our sales teams now focus on solutions that truly add value for clients, instead of relying on outdated approaches. This shift directly supported better sales results and long-term growth.”
