Originally, they bought Totara to manage the delivery of learning to their Internal audience. Since then, the platform has developed to meet business needs to include external clients. The Challenge
Rapiscan needed to meet their client’s needs by delivering blended technical and system accredited training in one centric platform. In order to deliver their system and technical training to their clients in sectors such as, aviation, critical infrastructure, event security, defence and customs and border control (all with competing needs), they really needed something through which they could tailor their offering to client’s needs.
Rapiscan also had product experts with knowledge that could supplement the digital learning, but no easy way of sharing their knowledge (and that’s where Totara Engage came in).
As the platform and their offering has grown and global markets have increased, this has changed their requirements. Their visual theme was falling behind, and they were looking for a more contemporary look to be able to market the platform to external clients.
In addition, customers needed separation for better management, so multi-tenancy was also needed.
The Solution
An upgrade to Version 15 was required to utilise Totara’s multi-tenancy functionality. This now allows Rapiscan to tailor the offering to individual clients and gives client leaders access to ‘live’ report data. It also allows bespoke branding for their enterprise clients.
Totara Engage was implemented to allow subject matter experts to add product resources and micro-learning articles to supplement digital learning.
As for the rebranding, Totara partner Learning Nexus worked with Rapiscan to address the need for a refreshed brand with customer engagement in mind. This worked to create their branded version of Totara Learn and Engage, called Cortex.

Results
The implementation has enabled Rapiscan to offer a much higher quality service to its clients. This has helped them to increase training engagement, and to introduce structured pricing tiers.
They now have an ever-growing list of client ‘tenants’ (currently 57) as well as 700+ completions in January-February 2023 alone. The Upgrade to Version 15 also allows Rapiscan to tailor the offering to individual clients and gives client leaders access to ‘live’ report data. It also allows bespoke branding for their enterprise clients and a host of other benefits, including:
Increased Engagement
- Introducing Totara Engage has increased site engagement. The introduction of like/share and social features means they can quickly see what their people are talking about.
- Branded dashboards, will mean increased engagement with employer branding and employer content.
Rebranding
- Rebranding was crucial, along with the name. Now, it’s no longer referred to as ‘the LMS’ – creating a TM name has given it an identity.
- The new graphics, colours, and welcome dashboard functionality within the upgrade has increased the UI, reduced click fatigue and highlighted the learner profile for increased personalisation.
- The welcome dashboard has created quick access to information from a central location.
- Rapiscan can now introduce bespoke branding for our customers and distributors to promote their brand.
- Rapiscan worked with Innovate-Learn to create a course page plug-in to transform the interface and navigation of the standard course pages, and this was a major addition to the rebrand.
Data segregation
- Being able to silo users and data across our distributors has been invaluable from an admin and reporting perspective (57 so far, but this is expected to rise to around 200 quickly).
- Rapiscan can now search for data, report, and create bespoke reporting dashboards per customer/distributor, increasing reporting efficiency and giving customers direct access to rich training data.
- The tenant functionality has also supported the branding and sales models.
Tiered Pricing Model
- The additional functionality has supported the introduction of a tiered pricing model.
- By segregating the functionality and mixing this with content licenses, Rapiscan have been able to launch a modern pricing model to increase revenue.
- This has brought cost savings to their customers and provided them with flexible options to suit their business requirements, and the ability to tailor packages to their needs.
