Five key tips to deliver learning with impact

Luke Watts is a Customer Success Manager at Totara Partner Titus. With years of experience in the e-learning industry, Luke has delivered hundreds of Learning Management Platforms (LMSs) to various organisations and witnessed the effectiveness of impactful learning experiences. We’ve sat down with Luke to see if he can share some firsthand tips and lessons to help deliver great LMS learning experiences.

1. Understand your audience

First of all, who is your learning for? You can’t begin to meet their learning needs if you don’t know who they are, and what they need to achieve. And of course, your learners will be a diverse group with a range of needs. Personalisation plays a key role in engaging learners, ensuring that the content resonates with their professional aspirations and organisational goals.

2. Engaging courses with interactive content

Learners value relevance and variety in their learning experiences. While interactive tools like H5P are a great way to enhance engagement, it’s essential to diversify content with various formats, such as multimedia presentations, simulations, and real-world case studies. Think about the learning methods that are appropriate for the subject, audience and overall objectives. Do they give opportunities for structured practice, putting their developing skills into action? Incorporating various content types also sustains interest and helps foster an environment of impactful learning.

3. Encouraging reflective practice and self-assessment

In a similar stream to engaging content, fostering a culture of reflective practice is instrumental in promoting continuous learning and professional development among your learners. Encourage them to engage in self-assessment activities that prompt reflection on their own learning journeys and experiences. Provide opportunities for learners to document their achievements, challenges, and insights gained throughout the courses and give them a space to reflect on the above too. I’ve found that organisations that genuinely succeed, encourage a habit of self-reflection so that learners can deepen their understanding, refine their skills, and drive meaningful impact within their roles.

4. Effective course structures

At most organisations, learners often juggle different responsibilities and time constraints. So, well-organised course structures are essential for optimising learning outcomes and maximising efficiency. Ensure that course materials are sequenced, with clear learning pathways and intuitive navigation. Incorporate visual cues such as progress trackers and milestone achievements to motivate learners and track their progress.

5. Facilitating mobile accessibility and flexibility

This one won’t be new for most people, but there’s a reason for that: In today’s digital landscape, mobile accessibility is crucial for accommodating different learning environments and schedules. Optimise your content for mobile devices to enable anytime, anywhere access for learners and encourage learners to download and utilise mobile learning apps like the Totara app, which offers convenient access to course materials and resources on the go.

By incorporating these five critical tools into your LMS strategy, you can enhance the effectiveness and impact of your learning initiatives, ultimately empowering learners to achieve their educational goals, and your business to meet its KPIs.
