Revolutionising Healthcare Training: A Successful Migration to Totara

Salud Digna is a health organisation based in Mexico that provides affordable and accessible healthcare services to underserved communities. With a focus on preventative care, Salud Digna offers a wide range of medical services, including diagnostic testing, consultations, and health education.

With more than 100 clinics and mobile units throughout Mexico serving over 3 million patients each year, and 10,000 employees, the mission of Salud Digna is to improve the health and well-being of all people, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

The Challenge

Salud Digna, a constantly growing company, partnered with Kineo with the goal of creating a motivating and intuitive learning experience for their collaborators.

The company’s rapid growth to 10,000 people generated a large number of HR-related changes (hires, departures, and transfers) in their system, resulting in time constraints and increased costs for managing learning courses tailored to each position in the company.

Salud Digna  identified that it was necessary to improve course delivery times and generate a more suitable user experience, offering a better structured and effective development plan for their Clinic Managers and other operational roles.

Pain points identified included a lack of clarity for users on how to take their training and guidance on which courses to take first and in what order. All the existing courses were available to everybody without a guide on which one should be taken first.

The Solution

Salud Digna reached out to Kineo, a Totara Platinum Partner, to develop a solution through Totara Learn that could meet their business needs and support their L&D strategy.

One of the keys to provide value to Salud Digna was to handle the integrations between Totara and other software tools used by the company. To achieve this, Totara Learn was integrated with Fortia (the HRIS used by the company) to automate the creation, update and deletion of users, organisations and positions.

The organisation needed to have a constant monitoring of training certifications and completions to run internal performance and compensations processes, in order to do this the platform was also integrated with Microsoft Power BI, which allowed them to pull the necessary information to use in external systems to run payroll.

To solve the main pain point that Salud Digna employees were having, which was the lack of guidance on which courses to take first, Kineo put in place the automation of learning content delivery through the use of Dynamic Audiences. Furthermore, an intuitive UX was implemented to help learners see pending content and its progress.

All of the previously mentioned tactics were enhanced with an engaging learning experience strategy, which utilised gamification elements such as a points system and leaderboards. This approach enabled users to become interested in participating in training programs not just because they were mandatory, but because they were also fun.

Results

The implementation of specific programs for each collaborator and a clear learning path were solutions that allowed for a more organised, continuous, and automated learning delivery that provided L&D efficiency and time savings. Thanks to this, Salud Digna was able to grow its courses from 500 to +2,000 in only two years, and achieve a 98% completion rate for programs and certifications on the scheduled time at the same time that the user population grew from 10,000 to 20,000 collaborators in less than a year, which makes this achievement even more outstanding.

Other key achievements that resulted from these solutions were:

  • The reduction of user inquiries by 75%: Learners now have processes in place to guide them to their next learning goal, which reduces the complaints and support tickets that the L&D team receives on a daily basis.
  • Brand awareness for the company: Thanks to the comprehensive work that Salud Digna does in training its collaborators, the company has positioned itself as a university in the eyes of media, industry leaders, and other stakeholders. This has had a positive impact on the brand in terms of public relations.
  • Internal time savings for the L&D team: the automations that took place in Totara allowed the internal L&D team to reduce operational time and focus on other projects.
  • The transition to a data-driven company: the integration of Totara with Power BI helped the L&D team to quickly segregate information and obtain the status of where they stand in terms of programs, courses and roles. Thanks to this the team has been able to make more informed decisions on where to begin their action plan which consequently improved the quality of their learning content.

“The user population increased by 50% in less than a year, from 10,000 to 20,000 collaborators. Without making the change to Totara, we wouldn’t have been able to manage the learning program effectively considering the exponential growth that we had.”

Estefany Cazares, Salud Digna University Manager
